Professional Poker with One Hand for PokerStars

Professional Poker with One Hand for PokerStars

THE PROBLEM โŒ

I joined the squad during PokerStars mobile-first transformation. The organisation strategy centred around "winning the phone".

The PokerStars community identified the want to be able to play their devices in one hand - enabling the professional poker experience on on-the-go. The challenge, therefore, was finding a way to deliver this experience with real customers money on the line for real professional poker players. The design would have to be familiar to the desktop experience, while also feeling robust enough to where customers felt comfortable playing on their phone where single button press can be the difference between winning and losing thousands of dollars.

As was being reflected in their advertising, this project was really a reflection of the organisations focus on mobile devices as part of their strategy. This project is within alignment of that wider strategic context.

This project lived and died on the button placement. I tried a variety of positions and button placements to make the game feel the best to play in one hand.

We had landed on two options to take us forward. While layout A was preferred internally for the aesthetics, layout B felt best for usability of the betting slider with one hand. In order to test our hypothesis, we launched a test on UserTesting to 10 customers.

I produced my own usability observational study on the UI. It's here that I identified that layout B ultimately was the best to use due to the ergonomic features of the button positioning.

PokerStars is the number 1 chosen poker platform for professional players. They not only expect a level of quality, but also that they can trust their phone to bet thousands of dollars at a time. It was a key part of this design that every single thing that you can do on the desktop, you can also do on your mobile phone.
